Plume’s Trust

Thomas Plume was Vicar of Greenwich  and Archdeacon of Rochester during the latter half of the Seventeenth Century.  Among other benefactions, Plume established a trust for the Augmentation of Poor Parsonages and Vicarages in the Old Diocese of Rochester.

This is still going strong and the Trustees are able to make grants of up to £3,000 to “necessitous” beneficed and licensed clergy in most parishes of the present Diocese of Rochester and the Archdeaconry of Southwark.  The Trustees meet to consider applications in March and September, but interim grants are sometimes made in cases of emergency.

Applications should be made to the Receiver, Mr Michael Blake, 33, Pembury Way, Rainham, Gillingham, Kent, ME8 7DL. 01634 362107,

Applicants will be asked to complete an application form and are normally interviewed by a trustee.  Personal details are, of course, treated by the Trustees as confidential.  The word “necessitous” is interpreted fairly broadly and in a modern context and the Trustees welcome applications from eligible clergy whom the Trust may assist.
