Rochester and Canterbury cricket team

Congratulations to the Rochester and Canterbury cricket team who won this week (Monday 19th June) in a 35-over Church Times cup match against Southwark diocese. Playing in the scorching heat at Rainham Cricket Club on a superb flat and even wicket, Southwark batted first and scored 125-9 with strong contributions from Sewell (36) and Stonier (24), with a tight fielding performance from Rochester and Canterbury managing to keep the score relatively low. Wickets were taken by Hugh Nelson Mathew Fitter and Jonathan Jennings.

Canterbury and Rochester got off to a slow start, pinned down early on by accurate bowling especially from Daley, whose five over spell included four maidens (two of them wicket maidens), conceding only a single boundary in the process. Rochester and Canterbury then accelerated away; Saju Muthalaly (50*) and Jonathan Jennings (29) and Mathew Fitter (13) in amongst the runs. The total was reached mostly through heavy hitting; 23 boundaries and a six making up 98 of Canterbury and Rochester’s 128, the required total being reached with a dozen overs to spare.
