The Deaneries - Rural/Area Deans

A Rural Dean (or “Area Dean”) is a priest with his/her own parish who is also appointed by the Bishop as a leader amongst clergy and parishes in a local area. He/she brings together the Deanery clergy for meetings in their “Chapter” and, along with a lay person, chairs the Deanery Synod. When a parish is without a Vicar, the Rural Dean works with the churchwardens to ensure that the life of the parish continues.

The Rural Dean is also a source of advice to local clergy and lay people and supports the Archdeacon and the Bishop in their work.
