Modern-day Slavery at St Luke, Sevenoaks
Date:
6th March 2020
Time:
20:00- 21:45
Description:
Modern-day Slavery will be presented by Michele Cooke who is well placed to speak on this subject since, as a volunteer for the Diocese of Rochester, she works on a Church of England project called the Clewer Initiative which has been raising awareness about this scourge on our country. Even though slavery is illegal in every country in the world, it still happens today all over the world, but hidden in plain sight. It is estimated that 40 million people are trapped in modern slavery across the world with 136,000 “slaves” in the UK. Michele Cooke will be talking about how modern slavery works, what can be done to prevent it happening in our local community and to whom to report suspicions of modern slavery. She will give a brief introduction to “County Lines” which are when gangs and organised crime networks groom and exploit young people to carry and sell drugs. Kent Police know that youngsters in Sevenoaks have been snared. Michele will highlight local examples using case studies and training written by the Clewer Initiative in collaboration with the Gangmasters Labour & Abuse Authority. There will be a retiring collection for the Diocese of Rochester’s work combatting modern-day slavery.

The “Food for Thought” talks are designed to offer the audience a clear, unbiased and accurate description of the subject matter and then allow the audience an opportunity to discuss the subject in small groups, leading to feedback in plenary of each group’s consensus view. A successful outcome to the evening would be that the audience leave satisfied that they have learned something (or had previous knowledge affirmed) and stimulated to act upon what they have heard.

Doors open 7.30pm with free entry and light refreshments
