Church brings the beach to south London

The buckets and spades have been out in south east London this week, as as theAnerley Team Ministry hosted another Urban Beach.

For one week during August, the car park of St. Paul's, Anerley is transformed into an urban beach with 15 tons of pure white children's play sand; this is the seventh consecutive year the event has taken place.

Over 1,000 people attend during the week - lots of young children along with their parents or carers.

Anerley is one of the most deprived parishes in the Diocese and many of the local community are not able to afford to go away for a holiday.  So instead of going to the beach, the beach comes to Anerley!

Team Rector, the Rev Matthew Fitter said, "This is always an excellent outreach into the local community.  Everyone enjoys their time at the beach and it also provides a gentle opportunity to share something of the good news of Jesus.

"On the final Sunday, we have an open air service on the beach, followed by a barbeque."
