Elections are being held this year for representatives of dioceses on the General Synod for the next five years. The Diocese of Rochester is invited to elect four proctors to the House of Clergy and four members of the House of Laity. We are now seeking nominations as part of this process and this email outlines how to access further information and the online nomination form. The nomination period runs from 23 July to 1 September 2021.

This year, for the first time, the election process will be carried out via the new Church of England Election Portal, facilitated by Civica Election Services. This means that nominations can be made, and votes can be cast, electronically. If you would like to stand for election but do not have an email, you are invited to make your nomination by completing the attached nomination form and returning it to the Presiding Officer at the Diocesan Office. Your details will then be uploaded to the Elections Portal by the Diocesan Elections Registration Officer. You will need to provide the names and email addresses of two qualified electors who are willing to act as your proposer and a seconder as part of that process.  They will then be contacted to confirm their agreement to the nomination.

It is important that our Diocese is appropriately represented in General Synod by a full complement of members, of all ages and backgrounds, who represent the rich diversity of our communities and church traditions. Please do seriously consider standing yourself or approaching someone you think would have the right kind of gifts and asking them to offer themselves for election. Attached are various papers, that will give you more detail about the work of the General Synod.

If you know of anyone who might be eligible to serve on General Synod, please encourage them to read the enclosed material and then contact Suzanne Rogers at the Diocesan Office to either obtain a personalised code (if they have email) or a nomination form (if they do not) to enable them to submit their details.

Please read carefully the documents which outline the qualifications of candidates, of those proposing and seconding them, and of the electors. Nominations must be submitted no later than 12 noon on Wednesday 1 September 2021.  Any nominations or responses from a proposer or seconder received after this date cannot be accepted.
