Medway Church wins funding to tackle a knife crime

Almost £30,000 has been awarded to a church in Rainham for a project to tackle knife crime across the Medway Towns. The money will enable St Margaret’s Church to come together with partners to reduce this type of crime and to work with young people who are at risk of carrying a knife and committing crime.

It is the only church in the country to be successfully awarded money from the Government’s Community Fund. The Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability, Victoria Atkins, said St Margaret’s Church would receive £29,915 for the project as part of the Government’s Serious Violence Strategy.

The project will work directly with young people as well as providing mentoring to secondary school pupils and conflict management training to teachers. St Gile’s Trust will be holding open sessions for parents and professionals across Medway on knife crime, gangs and county lines as part of the venture.

St Margaret’s Church will be running the project between September 2018 and March 2019.

Nathan Ward, Vicar of St Margaret’s Church says:

“This project will bring communities together across Medway and will work with both those of faith and none. The partnership organisations are a mixture of community groups and statutory agencies with a clear focus on having the community in the centre. This project is about the local community developing local solutions to issues we face.”

Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability Victoria Atkins said:

“It is vital that the government continues to support community groups who help young people build the resilience they need to take positive steps in life and steer clear of criminal activity.”

“Early intervention and prevention is vital to tackling serious violence and I am delighted we are able to increase the funding available to support more organisations.”

“As we continue to deliver on the Serious Violence Strategy I look forward to meeting and working with more of these organisations.”
