Knife Crime

On 6th April 2019 hundreds of Church Leaders and Christians travelled to Trafalgar Square to stand together against Knife Crime.  Standing Together was an ecumenical public rally where Church leaders, young people, and families stood shoulder to shoulder with families who have been directly affected by knife crime, many of whom recounted their agonising stories.  We united in encouraging communities to come together, for Christians to speak out against violence, support victims and help to find solutions to rebuilding trust on our streets, in our parks, neighbourhoods and communities across the country.

In 2018, 306 people were stabbed to death in the UK; this year is already showing a rise in numbers and the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, has met police chiefs to discuss urgent action to stop these violent crimes, many of them against children and young people.

Many factors are being attributed to this rise in knife crime, including the rise of drug gangs and ‘County Lines’, the closure of youth  services, the number of school exclusions and the breakdown of ‘Family.’

This year some churches are taking direct action against knife crime by Raising Awareness, Praying and taking local action, including;

  • Transform Bromley Borough (ecumenical churches across Bromley Borough) are praying via Peace On Our Streets; www.peaceonourstreets.org.uk/
  • Christ Church Anerley have launched King’s Boxing.
  • St Margaret’s Church Rainham and the University of Kent are holding a conference on 13th September; www.thepointconference.org

Rev Les Isaac founded Street Pastors in 2003 as a response to gun and knife crime in Britain's urban areas.  He says: "As a church community we can no longer look the other way. We must use the resources we have to hand to make a difference."
