The service of the licensing of Lay Ministers and Children and Young People Lay workers takes place this Saturday (9 May) at Rochester Cathedral.

What is a Licensed Lay Minister?
A Licensed Lay Minister in the Diocese of Rochester is a lay person who has been licensed by the Bishop to undertake ministry in and on behalf of the church.
The types of role, responsibility and duty of a LLM will vary according to the gifts and abilities of the individual, the needs of their parish or ministry setting, and the context of their life. Training for LLM includes developing capacity in Christian leadership and gaining knowledge and skills in different expressions of ministry, as preparation for the candidate’s particular situation.
The expectation is that a Licensed Lay Minister will be:
- Theologically articulate
- A reflective practitioner
- A leader alongside others in mission and ministry
Candidates being licensed today have simply completed one stage of their development.
Learning for ministry is a never ending process, and we trust that their training will give the foundations for continued learning and growth in ministry with colleagues in the parish and the other settings in which they are called to serve.
What is a Licensed Lay Worker in the ministry of Children, Young People and Family Ministry?
A Licensed Lay Worker in the ministry of Children, Young People and Family (CYPF) Ministry in the Diocese of Rochester is a lay person who has been licensed by the Bishop to undertake ministry in and on behalf of their parish church.
The types of role, and responsibility will vary according to their job description, the needs of their parish and community settings in relation to CYPF Mission and Ministry.
Training and experience for a CYPF LLW includes Theological Discipleship & Reflection, nurturing Spirituality with and in CYP, developing and Growing a Younger Church.
The expectation is that a Licensed Lay Worker in the ministry of Children, Youth and Family Ministry will be:
- Theologically articulate
- A reflective practitioner
- A leader alongside others in mission and ministry
- A specialist in discipleship and faith formation in Children and Young People
Candidates being licensed today have been recruited into parish roles to enhance, lead and coordinate specialised CYPF mission and ministry, working alongside the parish leadership.
The Diocesan Children, Young People and Families Mission and Ministry Team, supports, advises and networks the CYPF Licensed Lay Workers for continued learning, professional and spiritual development for growth in ministry with children, young people and their families whilst supporting one another across the diocese and in the parishes and communities in which they are called to serve.
