Praying the Way

February 2017


Pray for: the troubled areas of the world and for the refugee crisis, pray for wisdom for international governments to try to find a solution especially in Syria. Uphold those in leadership of powerful countries that they will be wise and mindful of their actions in a world where there is so much conflict.

Give thanks: that our God is in control.

Our country:

Pray for: continued wisdom for the Government in this unsettled time that they will seek the justice and truth and the common good for our country.


Pray for: all those parishes in interregnum that the right person will be found and for wisdom and discernment for those in all the selection processes; Bishop James, our Archdeacons and our senior clergy in their roles in serving our diocese.


Bromley Deanery

Give thanks: that our prayer co-ordinator Jenny Smith has received her eye operation and pray for complete recovery and healing.

Pray for: all plans and preparations for the Women’s World Day of Prayer and for Lent Study courses.

Erith Deanery

Pray for: a blessing on all our parishes and the work that they are doing for the Lord in their churches and communities.

Orpington Deanery

Orpington, All Saints

Pray for: the work of the Bible Society which we support both financially and through prayer and especially for Kirsten Stevenson from the Society as she comes to preach this month; our annual wedding preparations as there are 3 sessions in February.

Sidcup Deanery

Footscray with North Cray

Pray: that members of our congregations will feel empowered to take a more active role in the day to day running of our church while Rev Ren is on study leave and that she returns to us inspired and invigorated.

Sidcup, Christ Church

Pray for: the planned redevelopment of part of our church.

Sidcup, St Andrew

Pray for: Andy’s Coffee Shop, a new venture launched by St Andrews in August to run weekly on Friday mornings between 8.30-11am (Tea and real coffee will be served with breakfast and bacon rolls, muffins and cake) pray that it becomes established as a hub of the local community.

Sidcup, St John the Evangelist

Pray for: our home and study groups as a means of developing the existing cooperation between ourselves and All Saints Footscray.


Cobham Deanery

Pray for: our Deanery Synod meeting on 11 February, that God will speak to us and to our congregations as we look ahead.

Fawkham, Hartley,  Ash, Ridley and Longfield Cluster (FHARL)

Give thanks: for our lay ministers and pray for them as they begin to take more responsibility for services during clergy absence.

Pray for: following consultation that as our churches can move towards becoming a formal Group as we learn to work more closely together without losing our identities.

Ash with Ridley

Give thanks: for those in training for Licensed Lay Ministry and pray for them as they attend their residential weekend 4-5 February; for those who provide care for our elderly and frail neighbours and pray that all our church members may play their part.

Pray for: the young families who attended our various Christmas services that they may want to come to church again; for those who struggle with change that God will be close to them and help them learn to adapt to the new things He brings.

Cobham with Luddesdowne and Dode

Pray for: successful grant application for the St Mary’s Church Room and a start to the renovations.

Fawkham and Hartley

Pray for: our February Deanery Synod as we engage with the Diocesan ‘Our Conversation, Our Future’ document.

Istead Rise

Pray: to grow in our discipleship and to the things Jesus commanded us to do; to help each other to do the things Jesus commanded us to do; to have faith and be open to change so that we actually do what Jesus commanded us to do.

Meopham with Nurstead

Give thanks: for all the hope and joy of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany; for those who did the planning, for regular congregations and others who responded.

Pray for: the Christians in Itwola, Tanzania, with whom we are building a partnership; for blessing and guidance in our evangelism, for growth in the community.

Dartford Deanery

Pray for: the Dartford Churches Winter Shelter, that there will be enough volunteers, finances and that the circumstances for the guests will improve; the continued work the Anna Chaplaincy within the Diocese and the Deanery for working with those suffering from dementia; all plans and preparations for the Women’s World Day of Prayer on 3 March in the Deanery and for all plans for Churches Together Lent Study Groups; these churches who are in an interregnum: Darent Valley Benefice, Dartford  St Alban, Dartford St Edmund, Swanley St Paul and Hextable St Peter; for the right person to be appointed and for equipping of those running the churches at this time.


Pray for: continuing for our plans for our Church Room.

Dartford, Christ Church

Pray for: the ‘Developing your prophetic gifting’ training day on 18 February. May God bless John and Ann Coles as they come to minister to all who attend; that 2017 will be a year in which we seek to spend more time with God, reading the Bible and asking him to speak to our hearts and direct us in the way ahead.

Dartford, Holy Trinity

Pray for: a blessing on all that God is doing in our church and community.


Pray for: our Rector Kenneth Clark who is Rural Dean and our curate Rev Carol Avery.

Swanley, St Mary the Virgin

Pray for: a blessing on all that God is doing here.


Give thanks: for the Christmas services and pray that our outreach plans will be fruitful.

Gillingham Deanery

Pray for: a blessing on all that God is doing in our churches and the community we serve.

Give thanks: for the successful Christmas events.

Pray for: up-coming Baptism and Wedding preparations; plans for Easter events; wisdom for the way forward in our mission.


Pray for: the work of the Medway Homeless Shelter and for all those who serve it and are served by it.

South Gillingham

Pray: that as we move into the New Year we will be aware of God’s guidance and be ready to move forward with him; that more parents and their young children will become part of our church community and come to worship with us; for all those suffering from dementia and their carers.

Gravesend Deanery

Give thanks: for the services and events for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity with the theme of ‘Crossing Barriers’ as we focussed on 2 Corinthians 5: 14-20.

Pray: that we may find ways to cross the barriers in our parishes, our country and our world; for those who minister to the elderly and those with dementia; for those who are lonely and frightened, especially during the winter months and for the relatives, friends and neighbours who care for them; for God’s blessing on the new Street Pastors and School Pastors who were Commissioned on Sunday 22 January to minister in Gravesend and Northfleet; the work of parishes in schools, nurseries, playgroups and youth groups as we endeavour to spread the Gospel message; the NHS and all who are involved in medical care as the winter months put pressure on all health services.

Rochester Deanery

Chatham, St Mary and St John

Pray for: the selection and appointment of the Mission Leader for Chatham Town Centre.

Chatham, St Paul with All Saints

Pray for: the recruitment process for a new vicar.

Chatham, St Philip and St James

Pray for: the children and families that come to the Pancake party on 28 February at the church.

Strood Deanery

Pray for: God’s blessing on all that He is doing in the Deanery and in the communities the parishes serve.


Malling Deanery


Pray for: our church members as we plan our objectives for 2017

Coxheath, East Farleigh, Hunton, Linton and West Farleigh

Pray for: the children’s work in the Benefice and our own children’s worker, Becky.

Snodland with Lower Birling

Pray for: the continued fundraising for church repairs to be successful and that the initiatives put in place with our young people will be sustained in growth.

Pray for: the PCC and churchwardens during the interregnum.


Pray for: Illumin8, our Year 6 and above group, and give thanks for their involvement in our Candlemas Service on 29 January.

Pray for: all staff, patients and their families.

Sevenoaks Deanery

Pray for: our new Youth group, ‘Papa Youth’ and for their continuing lifelong learning course.

Sevenoaks, St Nicholas

Pray for: 3 February: ‘Coping with Suffering’ an interview with Jeremy Marshall and a talk by Rev Jonathan Fletcher at 8pm in the Undercroft. 5 February: Tearfund Sunday, a guest speaker in the morning services and a shared lunch. 6 February: ‘If you could ask God one question’ taster evening is an introduction to our Christianity Explored Course running in Mondays from 20 February to 27 March at 8pm in the Undercroft.

Kippington, St Mary

We will have just shared in our second parish weekend away at the end of January. Give thanks for: the ministry of our speakers, David and Lesley Cooke, and pray that we may grow further in our faith from all we will have heard.

Pray for: our Sunday sermon services on the Ten Commandments, for all who preach on these subjects, finishing with Commandment No. 1 on 19 March.   On 26 February Justyn Larcombe will preach. Give thanks for his testimony to being set free from gambling addiction and pray for his work for the West Kent Debt Advice, along with several church members who are part of the team.  A number of us have been struck down with flu and heavy colds. Pray for: good health this month, especially those of us who will be on half term holiday; that as a church family we may continue to grow in faith, hope, love and reaching out to our neighbourhood.


Pray for: 6 - 8 February for several of our members going to Feald-y-Brenin, a Christian retreat centre. 28 February Shrove Tuesday pancake lunch for all

Shoreham Deanery

Pray for: all activities planned for 2017


Give thanks: that Messy Church and Open the Book continue to be so popular and well received as they minister to the children in our community.

Pray for: plans for our new Breakfast Church due to start in early Spring.

Kemsing with Woodlands

Give thanks: that the youth groups still continue in their temporary premises.

Pray for: unity of purpose for the plans for the rebuilding of the church hall, which is so needed.


Pray for: our re-ordering project starting shortly.


Pray for: the right person to come forward to be our Vicar; we are fourteen months into our interregnum; our readers, churchwardens and all who are working so hard for us at this time.

Stansted, with Fairseat and Vigo

Give thanks: for the new Cloisters extension at St Mary’s Stansted and the ways it is being used.

Pray for:  our outreach and for a permanent building for Vigo Church.


Give thanks: that Breakfast Church is going well and that we have a new reader.

Pray for: work on our church roof and give thanks that we have raised the money.

Tonbridge Deanery

Chiddingstone with Chiddingstone Causeway

Pray for: those preparing for marriage and those preparing for confirmation in March.

Crockham Hill

Pray for: decorating and lighting project to go smoothly and for the men who are working in the church.


Pray for: the preparation underway in terms of fundraising for the group, particularly youngsters who will be yet again part of rebuild Mexico this spring; the preparations for Lent groups that we will be able to reach those who may not naturally be led to attend these.


Pray for: ‘Who let the Dads out’ – Dads and children having time together


Pray for: the Alpha Course

Give thanks and pray for: the new head teacher appointed to Penshurst School
