Diocesan Secretary retires

Gratitude and farewells have been offered to Geoff Marsh who retired at the end of May from his role as Diocesan Secretary.

A recent service at Rochester Cathedral allowed friends and colleagues the opportunity to give thanks for all his has given to the Diocese.

He first came to the Diocese in 1998 on secondment from the Church Commissioners but ended up staying.

Reflecting on Geoff's time in the Diocese, Bishop James said:

"During my time as Bishop, Geoff has served as Deputy Diocesan Secretary, Acting Diocesan Secretary and Diocesan Secretary.

"Geoff has, therefore, devoted a professional lifetime to serving in church administration; he has done so with care, faithfulness and humanity.

"I know that many will join me in wishing to thank Geoff for all that he has given over these years. We will hold him and his wife Linda in our prayers as they begin this next part of their journey together."

The process for appointing a new Diocesan Secretary is now under way and during this time, Matthew Girt (Associate Diocesan Secretary), will take on the role of Acting Diocesan Secretary.

In this role, Matthew will exercise all the formal responsibilities which normally rest with the Diocesan Secretary, including those of Secretary to the Diocesan Synod and Company Secretary for the Diocesan Board of Finance.

Bishop James said: "I have every confidence in Matthew’s capacity to fulfil this role and look forward to working with him over the coming months. As we approach this time of transition, please hold Matthew in your prayers and also the process for the new appointment."
