As we approach the end of the school term, the Diocesan Board of Education has been busy welcoming just over 1,000 Year 6 pupils from across the Diocese to Rochester Cathedral for one of their Church Schools’ Celebration Days.
Thirty-one schools took part over three days, with a range of activities on offer and a chance for the young people to reflect on their life’s journey so far.
Both Bishop Jonathan and Bishop Simon attended one of the days and participated in act of worship with the children
“It is surprising how many of them have not managed to visit Rochester Cathedral already but this means that we can help them to see just what an amazing place it is,” says Virginia Corbyn, Deputy Director of Education.
She continued:
“Most importantly, they have experienced worship as have so many who have come there before them, hearing wise words for their journey onwards from one of our Bishops or Cathedral canons.
“Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who make this event so special for the children and for the staff who come with them."
The pupils clearly had a fantastic time too, as Debby Brown, a Teaching Assistant from Penshurst confirmed:
"What a fantastic day...The children (and staff) really enjoyed it and it was a great opportunity for them to reflect on their time at primary school and our Christian values."
School celebrations elsewhere
Meanwhile elsewhere in the Diocese, in Bromley, over 200 Year 5 pupils enjoyed a day at Bromley Parish Church.
The Archdeacon of Bromley and Bexley the Venerable Allie Kerr, joined in one of the many varied workshops, that included drumming, dance, drama, cooking, tower tours and bell ringing.
