New artwork revealed

A stunning new artwork has been revealed at St. Justus, Rochester.

Called, The St. Justus Cross, the dramatic installation is made up of nine canvases and is the creation of local Christian artist, Ken Hopper.

Bishop James unveiled the artwork at a special service in November.

The Rev Helen Burn, vicar of St Justus says: "It's really stunning. Ken has spent a long time creating something that is both accessible and theologically profound."

The unique installation was commissioned by the PCC and is inspired by an earlier piece of work by Ken, which depicted a brick wall with a jagged hole in the rough shape of a cross, through which a green landscape could be glimpsed.

Helen, says that the key theological insight of that original piece remains central, namely that it is only through the cross of Christ that a new reality becomes visible to us.

"In this new work, Ken has expanded on this idea, incorporating a range of symbols.

"These create a cryptic web of allusion to draw the viewer in and to cause them to ponder, leading them deeper into the mystery of the cross.

"The ultimate meaning of life, the installation hints, is to be found through the cross as the only lens through which to see truly."

Ken currently has had two solo exhibitions at the Nucleus Arts centre in Chatham.
