A new community lunch at All Saints, Langton Green is proving a soup-er success.
As in many towns and villages, isolation and loneliness are big problems.
In the absence of the ‘garden gate’ and in an age of social media many of us simply don’t know our neighbours.
Although running a number of activities to reach out into the community, Emma Stevens, Church Warden at All Saints, Langton Green says, isolation is still an issue:
"We try hard to get to know, and say 'hello' to, all the new families and newbies into the village, but that relies on referrals and being given the heads up."
Then an opportunity appeared.
The owner of the local Pavilion Cafe took the initiative to set up a community lunch. However, realising just how much work was needed, Emma says the church came alongside to help:
"We teamed up! Church, village society and local cafe.
"It's been wonderful to see the community working together to bring delicious home cooking to those who may need support, friendship and an opportunity to feel loved, wanted and part of something much bigger."
Volunteers came forward, local businesses offered discounts and the first community lunch was held in November.
Thirty-five people enjoyed a three-course homemade lunch lovingly prepared by people giving their time and energy.
Emma says it's brought lots of people together and everyone is looking forward to next time:
"Many of the volunteers didn’t know each other until the day, so new friendships have been made even there
She continued: "One volunteer sent me a message after which said, 'I drove home smiling away to myself at what a great day today was, how much everyone seemed to enjoy it and what a lovely bunch you all are. Looking forward to the next one!'"
