There’s a new energy at St Nicholas Church in Sevenoaks — and it’s not just spiritual.
Early in 2025, a significant step was taken toward a more sustainable future as solar panels were installed on the church’s south aisle roof, a long-term investment that reflects St Nicholas’ commitment to stewarding creation wisely while continuing its century-old mission.
The project was carefully overseen by Operations Director Beverlea “It’s about planning for the future, lowering costs in the long run, and caring for God’s world — all while keeping our gospel mission at the centre.”
St Nicholas Church has been part of the Sevenoaks community for over 900 years, with an evangelical ministry rooted in the gospel and a strong emphasis on outreach.
But the church family knows that good news is often lived, not just preached — and creation care is a powerful way to demonstrate that.
The installation of the panels came alongside a new roof covering of the Grade II* listed church, making the project a major investment in the building’s future. The power generated will be used entirely by the church itself to support ministry on-site, day to day.
Importantly, care was taken to respect the church’s heritage. The panels are tucked discreetly behind a parapet, meaning they are completely invisible from the ground — a key requirement agreed upon with Historic England, Sevenoaks District Council, and the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC).

This balance between sustainability and sensitivity was essential, especially in a building with such historical and community value.
St Nicholas has always been a church that embraces change with purpose. In 1995, it undertook a major building project, excavating beneath the structure to create more space for ministry.
Today’s solar panel initiative continues that legacy as St Nicholas seeks to look after its church family, and the world it inhabits — so that generations to come can know the light of the gospel, both literally and spiritually.
