Running from 1 September to 4 October, Creationtide is an ecumenically recognised season dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life.
Amidst the climate crisis and the coronavirus pandemic, now more than ever, is the time for Christians to come together and take action on the environment.
Many parishes, including the Diocese itself, have made commitments to become Eco Churches, and are finding opportunities to show their care and concern for the environment at this time.
Over in South Gillingham Parish, they will be holding a Creation Care Weekend on the 5 and 6 September, with some physical activities taking place, as well as on social media, with guests speakers and hourly updates on their Facebook page about how we can care for Creation.
To help them get ready, St. Paul’s Church, Parkwood held a ‘Creation Care’ Workshop for families on Friday 21 August 2020.
The children made model oceans to remind them of how clean our oceans should be with plentiful fish and other sea-life thriving.
They added plastic items and learnt about how plastic breaks down and gets eaten up by fish and ends up in the food we eat and how it impacts all sea-life.
The children’s work will be on display at St. Matthew’s Church, Wigmore at the Eco Fair on 5 September.
There are lots of resources available to help churches take part in Creationtide and to start conversations about care for the environment in their communities.
- Season of Creation - an ecumenical site offering resources and prayer
- Church of England Environment website
- Climate Sunday - choose a Sunday during Creationtide to hold a Climate Sunday service
- Spring 2020 edition of Diocesan Together magazine with a focus on the Environmen
- 'A Time for Creation' - a new compilation of worship materials from the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England, to encourage us to praise God for his creation, take responsibility for our actions, repent of our misuse of natural resources and hear the voice of creation itself in our prayer.
