In an exciting new development, St. Augustine’s Parish Church, Slade Green has launched a new Sensory Church.

Designed to include children with neurodiverse abilities, it offers them, their families, and siblings, a relaxed, non-judgmental environment.

Taking place one Thursday a month, from 3.15pm to 5.15pm, visitors are free to come and go during those times, adding to its informal nature.

The idea came about, says the Rev Jim Bennett, vicar of St Augustine's, from acknowledging that parents were finding it difficult to bring their children who are neurodiverse to church, as it can be a busy place:

“We believe that every child and family should feel welcomed and valued in our community, and that God has asked us to offer this solution.”

The Sensory Church is the latest in a series of activities the church has developed as part of its mission to serve all members of the community.

Through partnerships with local organisations, the church extends its reach beyond its walls, addressing the needs of the community and providing essential support such as Messy Church, the Welcome Café and Foodbank.

It also recognises the essential role that children and families play in the life of both the church and the broader community.

Thanks to generous funding from the Diocese through the national church’s Strategic Development Fund, the church has focused resources to support the spiritual development of its younger members.

This has included the hiring of a dedicated staff member, Jacki Clements, as their Children’s and Families Pioneer.

Working three days a week, Jacki’s role is to develop worship communities for children and ensure their active participation in church life.

"Alongside Sensory, Junior and Toddler Church, we also go into local schools and do Bible Club, spreading the Gospel.”

She adds:

"These initiatives ensure that children and youn people not only feel a sense of belonging but also have the opportunity to grow in their faith.”

This intentional work is bearing fruit, says Jim, with the church witnessing a notable increase in interest from local families, with St Augustine's connecting with 30 to 40 families a week.

"Families have expressed a deep desire to learn more about the Christian faith and become more involved in church activities,”

He adds:

“They are sensing God’s presence in their lives, and we are honoured to be a part of their spiritual journey.”
