Lego helps build connections

When Lego is involved, there is usually fun to be had - unless you come across some bare-foot on the floor (ouch!).

Now Christ Church, Tunbridge Wells, is using the popular bricks as a novel way to engage with families in the town.

Lego Saturdays are advertised to the local community as ‘Fun for all ages who love Lego’.

Watch this short film Christ Church have made to invite people to come along

Held once a month in the church café space - an hour and a half of brilliant builds, free play, crazy games, refreshments and a Bible brick challenge ensure.

With loads of Lego (mostly donated by the congregation) out to play with, Naomi Hutchison, Associate Pastor, says it has quickly become a space for parents to have quality time with their children and to make connections with other parents:

"It's a great Saturday morning activity for families who find weekends hard and a light hearted way to share a Bible story and encourage thinking around that theme.

"Games have included a Lego marble run;  guess the number of Lego bricks in the jar; Lego brick relay race with chopsticks; Lego ring toss; and who can get rid of all the Lego bricks from their hat the fastest by jumping and up and down!"

Each session includes a challenge to tell a Bible story in under a minute and then children are encouraged to build their own interpretation of a theme that comes out of the story.

Naomi says that the highlight of each session is the Lego parade where everyone shows what they’ve built on the chosen theme:

"So far we’ve had Lego parades on ‘kindness’ and ‘safety’."

She continues that, as a team, they've been excited to see that there are equal numbers of families coming from church and from the local community:

"It’s wonderful to build relationships in this setting, with those who don’t come to church.

"I’m sure Lego Saturdays, in various forms, is something that many other churches could replicate – with a little bit of imagination, a lot of Lego and a willing team. As we always say, ‘We’re building Lego and building relationships’."
