This year marks a remarkable milestone for St Mary’s Island Church, Chatham, as it celebrates 25 years of faith, community, and mission.
For this church led by lay people, what began as a leap of faith by a handful of passionate individuals, has grown into a thriving, friendly congregation, who are committed to ‘creating spaces for our community to encounter Jesus.’
To commemorate the anniversary, a special re-dedication service was held on Sunday, 19 January.
Bishop Simon Burton-Jones, the Bishop of Tonbridge, led the service, which featured founding members sharing their memories and experiences of establishing the church.
For the church’s Focal Lay Leader, Matt Keeler, St Mary’s Island Church represents love and service within the community.
"Our best asset is really our people, stepping up to contribute so much of themselves."

He adds:
“This has been a moment to reflect on God’s faithfulness over the past 25 years and to look ahead with excitement and hope for the future.
“All are welcome to join us as we continue our mission of creating spaces for our community to encounter Jesus.”
It's this ethos of selflessness and dedication has been the cornerstone of the church's success since its earliest days.
A Journey of Faith
St Mary’s Island Church began with a small group of believers inspired to plant a church on the island.
Founding member Gwynne recalled how it all started:
"They needed volunteers to run the services and attend the church and they asked for a 12-month commitment.
My first reaction was, ‘Not me!’ But gradually, as I prayed about it, I thought it was doable and only one Sunday a month, after all. So, I said that I would commit to 12 months."
Gwynne’s story highlights the courage and determination of those early members who trusted in God’s plan.
"It wasn’t an easy road. We had to establish a constitution and resolve some fundamental differences. But with love and humility, these were resolved because all sides were determined to make this wonderful new church work.
“It’s been a joy to be part of this church family for 25 years, and I’m so thankful that I was brave enough to respond to that nudge from God all those years ago."

Another longstanding member, Janet, reflected on the inspiring vision that led to the church’s foundation:
"From my perspective, I was in awe of the God-led inspiration to have a church on the island. My full admiration arose for that core group of people willing to be seconded from their own churches in which they were well established.
"It must have been quite a wrench to leave the comfort of their own church, but it made it clear to me that God was leading this group on."
A Welcoming and Vibrant Community
St Mary’s Island Church meets every Sunday morning in the school hall, a space that has become a spiritual home for many.
The congregation reflects the diverse and inclusive spirit of the island, and everyone, whether a long-time member or a first-time visitor, is greeted with warmth and hospitality.
Beyond Sunday services, the church is actively involved in the life of the community, hosting numerous activities at the Island Community Centre.
These include Little Fishes, a group for young families; the Youth Club and Scouts; as well as ladies’ evenings, home-groups, prayer groups, and creative outreach like painting and distributing stones for children to find.
The church also plays an active role in leading worship at St Mary’s Island School.

Bishop Simon says:
” St Mary’s Island Church is a testament to what can happen when ordinary people step out in faith, embrace God’s vision, and work together to make it a reality.
Here’s to 25 years of love, service, and community—and to many more to come!”
